She graduated from the Sorbonne Saint Charles University of Fine Arts in Fine Arts and Art Sciences, and from the Michelet Institute, Paris, in Film Studies. She then moved to the United States, and lived in California and New York, for nearly ten years. She came back from the USA in 1990 and set up her studio in France where she lives and works. In Paris, she is represented by the Eric Mouchet Gallery. Christine Barbe’s work has been shown in numerous exhibitions throughout the world. It has been presented in museum exhibitions in France at the Grenoble Museum of Modern Art, at the Cordeliers Convent, at the Coprim Foundation, in Japan at the Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, in the United States at the Museum of Contemporary Art in San José, in Switzerland at the Deutsch Foundation, Lausanne, in Morocco at the Asilah Contemporary Art Fund, at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Ningbo, China. Her artworks are in numerous private collections in the USA, Japan, Europe, as well as in the permanent collections of museums and foundationsChristine Barbe’s practice lies at the crossroads of painting, drawing, photography, video and sometimes installation. She deconstructs each medium she uses by sliding from one to the other, from video to drawing, from photography to painting.
Through re-appropriation or associations, the themes of her work oscillate between the personal sphere of the artist where she stages herself in her relationship to the world: confinement, uprooting or the question of identity / and the highlighting of landscapes in mutation, an abandoned modern utopia where the impact of humankind reshapes its landscape/territory.
