Requiem pour le XXème siècle is the 18th opus of the Cycle de l’Ange that Maria Klonaris and Katerina Thomadaki made between 1985 and 2013, and which includes about thirty works (photos, videos, installations, performances, radio creations and an artist’s book).
The Cycle de l’Ange is built around a medical photograph of hermaphrodite found in the archives of Dr.Klonaris, Maria’s father, from which the two artists examined the question of intersexuality.
Here “the photograph of the Angel-hermaphrodite is related to images belonging to the public memory of our century: extracts of news of the Second World War reworked and transformed by various optical and electronic processes.
This war was a digest of violence (biological and ecological destruction, racism, ethnic cleansing, persecution of difference…) that other wars, current, perpetuate. A metaphorical scene of all past, present and future wars.” *
The Hermaphrodite-Angel, blindfolded, naked, different and dissident, is assailed by these images of war and destruction, signs of the madness of men, of whom he is « in turn an observer, a witness, a victim and a judge »*.
